Reform of the GST is constantly in the media, with most attention focused on the idea of raising the rate or removing major exemptions from the base. Yet there are many more fundamental issues that must be addressed to ensure that our second most important tax remains resilient. How will the GST cope with the global digital sharing economy, the increasing importance of financial services, and other key challenges to integrity of the base? And what are the real economic and distributional consequences of a base-broadening reform to the GST?
This conference brings together leading law design, policy, economic and administrative experts to debate the future of Australia’s GST in the real world.
