Join Omer Majeed as he presents a seminar on the impact of competition on the aviation sector. A healthy aviation sector can deliver cost of living benefits to consumers and help keep Australian businesses competitive. As the aviation sector augments labour and capital mobility, it can be critical for business dynamism. Social inclusion of remote areas and freight transport also depend, in large part, on a well-functioning and affordable aviation sector. Evidence from Europe and North America highlights that competition has transformed the aviation sector in these regions. Omer will discuss their work using detailed microdata to present a summary of the first descriptive and econometric study in Australia. The authors document how competition in the aviation sector has trended over the past decade and its impact on domestic airfares.

Omer Majeed is the Manager for Data and Evaluation team in the Competition Taskforce, Department of the Treasury. Prior to that he was the Research Manager at the Reserve Bank of Australia. In addition to his public service work, Omer lectured Economic Growth at the Australian National University. Omer completed his PhD at the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University. Omer has published papers on inequality, economic growth, trade, innovation, productivity, monetary policy and competition.

Note: Co-authors of this paper are Robert Breunig and Adrian Domazet.
