The Social Policy Institute at the Crawford School of the ANU runs a series of workshops exploring major social policy concerns. The workshops are run on the Chatham House rule and involve invited academics, researchers, public servants and others from the policy community.

The workshops are jointly hosted by the Social Policy Institute at the Crawford School of Public Policy, the Tax and Transfer Policy Institute at the Crawford School (TTPI) and the ANU Centre for Social Research and Methods, with the support of the Australian Social Policy Association.

These workshops re-commenced in 2021. The second workshop was held on Friday 23 July online, with a presentation by Associate Professor Elizabeth Hill of the University of Sydney. The topic of the second workshop was “COVID-19, Gender and Work: Policy, Risk and Opportunities for a gender responsive recovery”.

Associate Professor Hill’s presentation provided a gender analysis of the impact of COVID-19 on paid and unpaid work over the past 18 months, the policy response, and outstanding risks and opportunities for building a gender equal labour market and economy. Elizabeth Hill is Associate Professor in Political Economy at The University of Sydney, Co-convenor of the Australian Work + Family Policy Roundtable and Deputy Director of the new Gender Equality in Working Life Initiative. Elizabeth’s current research focuses on the political economy of gender, the future of work and care, and migration and care work in Australia. She is a regular media commentator and advisor to government, unions and business. She is CI on Australian Women’s Working Futures Project and Co-convenor on Australian Work & Family Policy Roundtable
